Self-Care for Caregivers

Providing care for someone else even on an occasional basis may require more care for yourself.

 

Children of older adults can underestimate the ‘investment energy’ that can take a toll on their own lives.

EMOTIONAL HEALTH

  1. Take some ‘me’ time. Get care coverage for a few hours and go do something fun or meaningful for yourself.

  2. Don’t remain isolated. Keep your own social contacts. Not doing so will increase your stress and resentment.

  3. Find a support group. This is key to sharing with others that are in your same situation. Share ideas and emotional support.

  4. Reduce stress. Find ways to relax and quite yourself. Even stretching or good breathing exercises can help.

 

YOUR OWN SELF-CARE

        

  1. Eat Well. Fast food to save time will eventually cause your own health issues.

  2. Stay Active. Exercise, such as a walk, does wonders for mental and physical stress reduction.

  3. Keep up with your own medical needs. Don’t put off doctor or dentist appointments for yourself. Stay in bed in you need to.

  4. Get rest. Caregiving can interrupt sleep patterns and if your charge is taking a nap, maybe you could as well.

On an airplane, in an emergency, you are always told to put on YOUR MASK FIRST. If you don’t take care of you, you can’t take care of anyone else!
